What Is Semiotics ?

Semiotics

  1. It is the study of signs and symbols.
  2. Founded by swiss linguist (Ferdinand de saussure) from french, 26 November 1857- 22 february 1913 was a swiss linguist and swniotician. His ideas laid a foundation for many significant developments in both linguistics and semiology in the 20th century. He is widely considered one of the founders of 20th century linguistics and one of two major founders together with charles sanders peirce of semiotics / semiology.
  3. Other contributors include American philosopher charles sanders peirce and french theorist Roland Barthes.

  • What is Text?

  1. Semiotics is employed in the analysis of texts.
  2. 'Text' can exit in any medium and may be verbal, non verbal or both.
  3. The term 'text' usually refers to a message which has been recorded in some.
  4. It is physically independent of its sender or receiver.

  • What is a Sign?
  1. All the texts are composed of signs.
  2. A gesture or action used to convey information or an instruction.
  3. A symbol is a mark, sign or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea ,object, or relationship... for example, a red octagon may be a symbol for "STOP'. On a map, a blue line might represent a river. Numerals are symbols for numbers.
  4. Example for safety signs:


  • Signifier: 
  1. The image used to stand for something else.
  2. A man and a women running around a tree and singing
  3. Denotative meaning.
  • Signified
  1. What is stand for a real thing.
  2. Courtship, romance, love
  3. Connatative meaning.
  • Signifier- spoken word, written word, flag etc: something that represents a concept signified-- the concept that the signifier stands for. For example: the word "cat" is the signifier, and the concept of a cat is the signified. the two together constitute a sign.

  • Types of Sign
  1. ICON: which resembles its referent ( such as road sign for falling rocks, my computer icon).
  2. INDEX: which is associated with its referent( as smoke is a signof fire, clouds are an indicator of rain, thermometer is an indicator of fever).
  3. SYMBOL: which is related to its referent only by convention ( as with words or traffic signals, flowers for romantic affection).
  • There are two parts: The physical, or the sign as object and the psychological, or the sign as concept.
  • FILMMAKERS : show the visual signs such as smiles, scars, guns, badges, hairstyle etc.
  • Film posters and publicity materials send signals that cunvey about the genre of the film.
  • RED: passion, love, seduction, violence, danger, anger, adventure. since prehistoric times red is seen as the color of fire,blood and energy.
  • BLACK: power, death, evil, mystery, fear, unknown. it usually has a negative connatation ( blacklist, black humor). black is intimidating, unfriendly and unapproachable because the power it exudes.
