Ancient Olympic games


According to the available information written in history, the first ancient Olympic games were started in Olympia valley in 776 B.C. According to some learned persons, the natives of Olympia adored zesus as their god. Once god Zeus appeared on the ground of Olympia. Owing to this fearful anger the land was splitted. Then the pacify god Zeus, the people constructed magnification temple in the valley and started the tradition to offer sacrifice. Later on Hercules, the son of Zeus started the games and sports in the honour of his father.

Rules for competitions 


  1. The competitor must be only a Greek,completely from Hellenic race and must be physically fit.
  2. Savages and punished persons were not allowed to participate in these games.
  3. The competitor had to stay in Olympia for one month before the beginning of Olympic games. They had to take the oath that they had already taken the training for 10 months in their state.
  4. Women were not allowed to participate in competitions and see these games .
  5. For participants in games,the had to do practice for one month.
  6. Only amateur sports persons could participate in these games and not the professionals.

Opening ceremony of games 


On the day of opening ceremony all the players, their brothers, father's and trainers used to assemble in the auditorium. The expert of sports and games made them to take oath that they would participate in the games according to rules and they had got the training of ten months. After that, the sacrifice of a pig used to be offered before the god named Zeus Harikos. After this programme,one by one,all the players used to come out of the sports arena. Exactly at that time, the players were introduced to spectators. If one of the spectators had any objection against any player, he was not allowed to participate in compititions.

Awards


Less attention was paid to awards in ancient Olympic games. Only foodgrains and animals were given as a reward. After that, the crown made up of olive leaves,was started to be given to the winners even statues were also made ,poems were also composed and their names were recorded .More stress was laid down on respect and honour, instead of awards in these games .




Modern Olympic games


The credit to start the modern Olympic games goes to Baron Perie de Coubertin of France. Coubertin was born in Paris on Jan 1 1862. Having studied political science, he came to know about the national and international problems. He thought national and international problems can be solved through Olympic games. For these purpose he called a meeting of various countries in 1893. Some countries viz. Italy, Greece, Spain and Sweden were in favour of commencing these games, whereas rest of the countries opposed it. Again on June 16,1894, a meeting of 13 countries was held in Paris in which 75 reprensentatives participated. And was resolved that -"sports competitions should be held every fourth year on the lines of Greek Olympic games and every nation should be invited to participate". After much endeavours, coubertin succeeded in enlisting worldwide support and the first modern Olympic games were held in Athens in 1896.

Olympic Motto


It comprises three Latin words-
  1. Citius- faster 
  2. Altius- higher 
  3. Fortius- stronger

Olympic flag


It was suggested by coubertin in 1913. And was first inaugurated in Paris in June 1914. Olympic flag is made of white silk and contains five interlocking rings/circles in five colours reprensenting five continents of the world viz. America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa. The five rings have different colours viz. Yellow, green, red, blue, and black. The interlocking of rings symbolises cooperation and friendship.

Rules for competitors


  1. Any male and female can participate in Olympic games of they are amateur.
  2. Nowadays professionals are also allowed to participate in some of the sports. 
  3. These sportspersons are sent by their National Olympic Committee.
  4. No sportspersons can participate in these games without the approval as  well as recommendation of National Olympic Committee but now professional can also take part.

Opening ceremony of Olympic games 


First of all, Olympic torch or flame is burnt through sunrays in Olympic village (Greece) . The president or prime minister declares the games open in the stadium . Before this process, all the sportspersons take part in March past and they take oath.

Closing ceremony of Olympic games 


Sportspersons from all the countries get assembled in the stadium for closing ceremony. The mayor of that city and the president of the managing committee escort the president of international Olympic Committee to the stadium. He declares the games closed. After that, Olympic flag is lowered and it is given to the mayor of the city. Organised by various cultural programmes and Olympic song and the Olympic flame is extinguished.

Awards


The first, second and the third position holders are awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals and a certificate respectively. The next five position holders are also awarded with certificates only .
